(YOSEOB FANFICTION) A Tablespoon of Love

Description

When Yang Yoseob decides to cook for his exhausted girlfriend even though he's inexperienced.

“… One tablespoon of salt…” Yang Yoseob mumbled to himself as he dashed around in the kitchen of the apartment his girlfriend and him live in.
He tapped his feet along with the music playing from the music player and smiled to himself, imagining his girlfriend’s reaction when she sees what he’d planned for them.
Yoseob poured in the ingredients and fished out his phone from the pocket of his jeans. He slid his fingers across the slick screen, dialing in speed dial number for his girlfriend before sandwiching the gadget between his shoulder and his ear.
She answered on the third ring. “Oh, Yoseob-ah?”
“Yah, you sound tired. When are you coming home?” Yoseob pouted at the dull tone of her voice.
“Ah, I’m fine. Anyway, I’m in the taxi now.”
“Now?” he nearly shouted, his hands moving around to check the unfinished dishes in an instant. “Yah… yah, why are you coming home so early?”
“What do you mean? Is something wrong? Why can’t I go home early?” his frantic moves made loud rustling sounds, causing her to worry.
“No, no! Nothing is wrong. I-I got to go to the toilet. We’ll talk when you get home, okay!” Yoseob hung up after she answered okay.
“Really…” he groaned in frustration as he tried to work around the kitchen, opening and closing pots, pouring in ingredients and cracking eggs.
He could only pray that the time his girlfriend took to get home would be just enough for him to get everything done. Or else his plan would be ruined. As he reached for the plate on the upper shelf, Yoseob knocked over the bottle of oil, causing a generous amount of it to spill on the floor.
“Ah!” his hands flew up to his head, feeling an instant headache. “Yang Yoseob, calm down… you can do this… this is just a minor setback…” Yoseob mumbled to himself. But suddenly, it felt like everything went wrong. Just as he reached for the towel, he heard the door opened with a click. He froze in his tracks, wondering how on earth she got home so fast.
“Seob-ah, I’m so tired today. Let’s just go out and… what are you doing?” her eyes widened at the sight of the mess before her. Yoseob in an apron smeared with stains, the smell of burnt meat coming from the oven, the bubbling water from the pot, the kitchen utensils thrown everywhere on the counter and some kind of liquid splattered on the wooden floor.
Yoseob gulped. “I… I can explain.” he bit his lip. Knowing how much effort his girlfriend puts into keeping their apartment clean, it would drive her insane to see this mess. She could be the sweetest girl he’d ever known and yet, she could be the scariest.
Therefore, he nearly got the shock of his life when she threw her head back and laughed. He frowned at her with incredulity. Had the mess he created surprised her to the point of disposing her sanity? Poor, clueless Yoseob continued to watch as his girlfriend dropped her bag onto the floor and rushed towards him.
Okay, maybe the laughing was all just for cover. Maybe she was going to come over right now to give him a slap on his face. He braced himself for whatever that was coming, his thoughts only leading him to the darker, scarier places in his head.
But she wrapped her arms around his neck, still unable to stifle her laughter.
His body stiffened but Yoseob carefully placed an arm around her waist. “Is it really that bad? I promise I’ll clean this up, you won’t have to worry. And I’m sorry, I was just thinking how you’d be tired upon getting home from work so I figured I’d cook us dinner, I followed the recipes I found online but I never, in a million years, thought it’d turn out this bad.” She pulled away from him when he couldn’t stop babbling about how stupid he was and what a huge mistake he made and how much he knew about her effort to keep their apartment clean.
“Shut up, Seobie.” She gave her boyfriend’s shoulders a good squeeze.
“Oh gosh, you’re not mad are you? Please don’t be, I promise this will never ever happen again and–”
She placed a finger on his lips, shushing him for good. He could only pout in attempt to figure out her weird manner.
“Yang Yoseob, do you know how lucky a girl feels when her boyfriend who has never ever done any cooking suddenly decided to cook for her even though he could just rest on his one day off?” she chuckled and gave him a warm smile. “I feel so lucky, Yoseob. I feel… cherished.”
Slowly, realization hit Yoseob. His girlfriend was thankful for his effort. And though his effort didn’t give them something good to indulge in, his effort did result in something great. It made her realized how much Yoseob loves her. It had put her insecurities to rest. It was Yoseob’s turn to laugh now as he wrapped his arms around her waist. “Yah, why are you so insecure about our relationship? You are the best girlfriend I could ever ask for, okay?”
She lightly shoved him away. “Why are you so cheesy? Come on, let’s just clean up your mess! And don’t think I’m going to let you go for turning the kitchen upside down. You’re just not going to get it tonight.” she smirked causing the frown to return on Yoseob’s face.
“Are you… serious?” he pressed his lips into a thin line, hoping with all his might that his girlfriend was just kidding.
She shot him a glare and for a moment, he held his breath. But soon, her laughter rang around the room.
“I was just kidding.”
He heaved a relieved sigh, dramatically putting a hand over his chest.
“Yah, Yang Yoseob.” His eyes flickered to her again and this time, she had a warm smile on her face. “Gomawo.”
They ended up eating ramen for the night. It was amusing to Yoseob. How his plan of a beautiful candlelight dinner turned into slurping noodles out of cup noodles and laughing at a TV show. Maybe in other couples’ minds, the idea of a perfect night was a dinner and a walk hand-in-hand on the beach. But for this particular couple, just getting to be together was more than enough.
His initial plan wasn’t exactly ruined, really. In the end, he achieved the main goal he aimed for. And that was to be able to spend time with the girl he wants to spend the rest of his life with.
